Redistricting plan up for House vote; Dems leery

April 16, 2009

A Republican-backed plan to reform how Idaho's 35 legislative districts are to be redrawn after the 2010 U.S. Census cleared the House State Affairs Committee on a largely party-line vote Thursday.

The bill, which has cleared the Senate, would require the area within a district be linked by roads, when possible.

It also mandates counties not be divided when districts are created.

Sen. Bob Geddes, the measure's sponsor, is unhappy the creation of his eastern Idaho district in 2001 left him representing disparate regions, forcing detours through Wyoming to reach far-off constituents.

So he's pushing a revamp.

But State Affairs panel Democrats opposed the measure; they want more time to study how the changes will affect political boundaries that will remain for a decade.

It now goes to a full House vote.
