National Redistricting Reform Effort Hires Veteran Director, Nears Launch November 29, 2007 Campaign Legal Center http://www.campaignlegalcenter.org/press-3001.html
The Campaign Legal Center, along with the League of Women Voters and the Council for Excellence in Government, is pleased to announce that Pam Pryor has been selected as project director of Americans for Redistricting Reform. The project Ms. Pryor will lead is slated to launch officially in early 2008 and has been guided by a broad coalition of organizations. With initial funding provided by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the new initiative's goal is to build public support and be a resource for state-level redistricting reform efforts throughout the country.
Ms. Pryor has more than 25 years of experience in government affairs, public relations and communications. Among other achievements and honors, she has been named to WASHINGTONIAN Magazine's list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Washington.
"In our effort to reform the seriously flawed but deeply entrenched system of redistricting, we are fortunate to bring aboard someone with as much talent and experience as Pam Pryor," said J. Gerald Hebert, Executive Director of the Campaign Legal Center. "She has worked on Capitol Hill and the halls of power in both Washington and on the state level, serving in the most senior capacities as both a staffer and an advocate. Her experience makes her particularly well-suited to bring about positive change."
"I am excited to take on this new and important challenge to help reform a system that has devolved in too many cases to the point where politicians are choosing their constituents and not the other way around," said Ms. Pryor. "I have witnessed the problems and voter disillusionment created by the abuses of the redistricting system, and I look forward to helping the broad-based groups supporting reform bring about much-needed change."
Ms. Pryor's work in Washington, DC has run the gamut from working for a public affairs company, owning her own business, and consulting with a wide range of groups before landing on "The Hill" as a congressional staffer. She worked as U.S. Rep. J.C. Watts' (R-OK 4) chief of staff and served in a dual role overseeing his leadership post of the Republican Conference until his retirement in January 2003. In these capacities, Ms. Pryor oversaw policy and appropriations issues for Rep. Watt, while directing communications for House Republicans.
Since Rep. Watt's retirement, Ms. Pryor served as Vice President of Government Relations for We Care America, and currently works as a consultant for clients ranging from Convoy of Hope to the Department of Labor (through the White House Writer's Group) to Habitat for Humanity. She serves on the board of the Reform Institute.
